When coffee lovers fall in love with a coffee chain like Dutch Bros, learning the new lingo can take a minute.

One of the most popular Dutch Bros drinks is the Breve, so I definitely found myself Googling – What is a breve Dutch Bros?

Below, I will unravel the mystery behind this popular drink at Dutch Bros. I'll uncover the "secrets" of a Breve and show you what makes it a favorite among the coffee shop's customers.

  • A Breve at Dutch Bros refers to the addition of half & half to espresso.
  • Dutch Bros has a variety of different flavored Breve coffee drinks with unique flavors!
  • These decadent drinks are often higher in calories.
  • A Breve copycat can easily be made at home.

What Does Breve Mean?

Breve is an espresso-based drink made with "Kick Me Mix," which is what Dutch Bros calls their half and half, instead of whole milk or skim milk.[1]

Don't confuse it with the Italian word 'breve,' which means short or small. The Breve at Dutch Bros isn't related to coffee size – it's all about the ingredients.

The result is a richer version and a more decadent drink with lots of foam.

The foam on top of a Breve is very stable, making it perfect for adding drizzles or toppings – for a higher calorie content, of course!

My favorite thing about the Breve is its versatility - you can have it hot, cold (iced), or frozen.

So, whether it's the middle of winter or the height of summertime, the Breve is a delicious treat.

6 Must-Try Breve Variations At Dutch Bros

1. Banana Bread Breve

Dutch Bros Iced Banana Bread Breve With Oat Milk and Caramel Drizzle

This Breve variation is only found on the Dutch Bros secret menu and is perfect for those who love pairing banana bread with coffee.

The combination of banana bread flavoring and a sprinkle of cinnamon on top makes this drink sweet and nutty, with a comforting warmth perfect for cool mornings or afternoons.

Plus, I enjoyed that the sweetness in this one isn't overpowering, so I can still enjoy the rich espresso flavor.

How To Order The Banana Bread Breve
  • Ask for 2 shots of white coffee and Breve (a quarter cup of half & half).
  • Ask for 2 pumps of banana syrup and 1 pump of cinnamon syrup.
  • Optional: Add a Soft Top!

2. Salted Caramel Breve

Dutch Bros Iced Salted Caramel Breve with Extra Soft Top

Salted caramel everything is super popular right now, so I wasn't surprised to see this one all over social media. This Salted Caramel Breve is a must-try because of the rich and creamy texture that sets Breves apart.

The salted caramel syrup creates a perfect balance of sweet and salty flavors, and the thick foam adds to the drink's presentation and taste.

I like to ask for extra caramel drizzle on top of this one for just a touch more decadence!
How To Order The Salted Caramel Breve
  • Ask for 1 or 2 shots of espresso (depending on your preferences) and Breve.
  • Ask for 3 pumps of salted caramel syrup.
  • Optional: Add a Soft Top and caramel drizzle.

3. Golden Eagle Breve

Dutch Bros Iced Golden Eagle Breve

The Dutch Bros Golden Eagle Breve is on the official Dutch Bros menu. When my barista is busy with a long line, I know this is an easy one to ask for because they all know exactly how to make it quickly.

The caramel and vanilla flavorings add a delightful sweetness that pairs perfectly with the rich and indulgent half-and-half.

It's perfect for anyone with a sweet tooth looking to try something different from a standard latte or cappuccino.

I like this one iced, but the hot version is also smooth and dreamy, especially with a couple of holiday cookies nearby.

4. Iced Sugar Cookie Breve

Dutch Bros Iced Sugar Cookie Breve with Soft Top

This Iced Sugar Cookie Breve is technically a seasonal item that pops up in late spring, and Dutch Bros notes that it's perfect for road trips. I couldn't agree more!

This indulgent beverage is one of my favorites because its unique cookie-like flavor perfectly complements the rich espresso.

The thick layer of foam on top is the chef's kiss! I've included directions for ordering this one if you happen to crave one in the off-season.

How To Order The Iced Sugar Cookie Breve
  • Ask for a double shot of espresso with Breve.
  • Ask for 1 pump each of almond roca, white chocolate, and vanilla syrups.
  • Top with raw sugar sprinkles.

5. Flap Jack Breve

Dutch Bros Iced Flap Jack Breve

The Flap Jack Breve is a simple twist on Dutch Bros Flap Jack. It is a creamy and decadent treat made with salted caramel, white chocolate, and vanilla. I totally recommend trying it blended to pack a punch to your taste buds!

It's a hit among those who love the flavors of caramel and vanilla, and the use of half-and-half adds an extra layer of creaminess to the drink.

I'm only a bit confused by the name, because to me "Flap Jack" would note maple flavoring, which is not at all present here.

BaristaHQ Tip: I like pairing Flap Jack Breve with Dutch Bros almond milk to add a little nuttiness into the mix.
How To Order The Flap Jack Breve
  • Ask for a Flap Jack Mocha with Breve
  • Optional: Ask for it blended!

6. Cookies And Cream Breve

Dutch Bros Iced Cookies And Cream Breve

This Breve has a delightful cookie twist that's sure to please. It's what I recommend to fans of Dutch Bros white coffee.

With a texture similar to a milkshake with a strong coffee kick, this Breve is the perfect treat for any coffee lover looking for something more decadent.

I love the sweetness of this one. It does mask the coffee flavors a bit though, making it really easy going down. I wouldn't let my kids get ahold of this caffeinated drink!

Around the holidays I love adding a pump of peppermint syrup to this one as well. It makes it taste like mint chocolate chip ice cream!

It's also good with chocolate macadamia nut syrup, if you want a more nutty cookie vibe.
How To Order Cookies And Cream Breve
  • Ask for 2 shots of white coffee with Breve and white chocolate syrup mixed in.
  • Ask for chocolate drizzle on top.

Dutch Bros Breve Vs Latte

The Breve has a heavier and creamier texture than a typical latte with whole milk.

The Breve is a more decadent and velvety beverage, the espresso flavor is mellowed by the addition of milk and half-and-half, resulting in a less pronounced coffee flavor. I feel like lattes are a bit lighter, especially when I order them with plant based milk.

If I'm having a big breakfast, I'll stick with a latte.

Appearance & Texture

The Breve has a thick foam that looks a lot like a cappuccino. The foam on top is just as stable as foam made from milk only and will look very similar to a latte.

Any syrup or drizzle added to the top of each drink stays put really well. This is probably because the Breve has a similar amount of protein as milk, which helps it hold its shape.

While the two look similar, the latte will feel lighter and less dense upon sipping.

This is because the fat content of the Breve makes it creamy and smooth, and allows less air in the foaming process.

There are 280 calories in a small Breve at Dutch Bros, which is 12 ounces.

A small latte, which comes standard with 2% milk, will have 142 calories.

Of course, if you ask for whole milk in your latte the calorie count will increase. And if you ask for half & half... well, you're actually then just asking for a Breve!

Nutritional Info

Both a Breve and a latte will have a similar about of carbs, and the same amount of caffeine.

The difference will be in the fat content of the dairy product used.

A small Breve has about 24 grams of fat, while a small latte only has 5.3 grams of fat when created with 2%.

So while the Breve is my standard go-to, I definitely switch it up and turn to a latte when my pants are feeling a bit snug around the holidays.

How To Make A Dutch Bros Breve At Home

The good news about Breves is they are super simply to make at home.

With this simple recipe you can make a hot or iced coffee Breve in just a few steps with your espresso machine.

  • 2 ounces of espresso or a freshly brewed cup of strong coffee (black)
  • 2-3 ounces half and half (use nonfat milk if you're counting calories)
  • An optional sweetener (may I recommend chocolate macadamia nut syrup?)
  • An optional cinnamon stick

  • Espresso machine, coffee maker, or Percolator
  • Whisk/ frother
  • Spoon
  • Steam wand
  • Mug

  • 1
Begin by making a strong pot of coffee or pulling two espresso shots from your espresso machine.
  • 2
Pour your brew or hot espresso shots into a mug.
  • 3
In a separate container, combine your milk and heavy cream in equal parts, or your half and half.
  • 4
Heat the half and half mixture using a steam wand or heat it in the microwave. Be sure not to overheat.
  • 5
Once your mixture is heated, pour it into your mug, withholding the foam.
  • 6
Scoop the foam on top of your mug, creating a thick layer.
  • 7
Add any syrups or sweeteners you like to your Breve. I usually go far vanilla, caramel, or hazelnut syrups. It’s typically served hot, but for an iced version, just add ice.
  • 8
Finally, take a deep breath and enjoy the fragrance and taste of your well-made Breve.
