Before I ever started working for Starbucks, I’d heard people order drinks ‘double-blended’ before.

I always wondered what it meant, but never really looked into it.

Is it an obvious, literal meaning or is there some other process involved?

I’m about to dive into all things double-blended so there’s no confusion!

  • Double-blended means literally ‘blended twice'
  • Double-blended drinks are smoother and creamier
  • Just about any cold drink can be ordered double-blended
  • Double-blended drinks are much easier to order at the store, not so much on the app

What Exactly Is A Double Blended Beverage At Starbucks?

In short, double-blended means the drink is blended twice.

Yeah, it’s that literal.

If I’d known that years ago, I probably would’ve ordered more blended drinks from Sbux.

I’m not a fan of little ice chunks in blended drinks, but getting them double-blended basically eliminated them!

Plus, they’re much creamier and easier to drink through a straw!

Best Double Blended Drink Options At Starbucks

Once I discovered the magic method of double-blending drinks at Starbucks, I had to try it on practically everything I could.

Let me share the best ones I’ve tried:

Creme Frappuccino’s

To be fair, I already liked the Creme Frapps as they’re, well...creamier than the others.

This variety of Frappuccino is so flavorful thanks to the double whammy of Starbucks heavy cream and sweet cream.

The Caramel Ribbon Crunch Frappuccino double-blended is probably my top choice.

It’s the perfect combination of sweet, salty, and crunchy, and double-blending makes it even creamier.

However, there’s one problem with double blending. When double-blending a Creme Frappuccino, some of the ingredients tend to separate.

I suggest asking for less ice when ordering a double-blended Frappuccino. It will lessen the separation of the milk and other ingredients.

Iced Coffee or Tea

I didn’t know this until recently, but I can also double blend my favorite iced coffee, tea, and really any Starbucks espresso-based drink.

Blending an iced drink can transform it into a delicious frozen treat that breaks up the monotony of a regular iced coffee every day.

I did notice that double-blended regular drinks separate relatively fast compared to Frappuccinos.

Regardless, I still really like them!

Barista HQ tip: Ask for whipped cream on top of a double blended iced coffee and tea. I also love adding a chocolate and caramel drizzle on top for a decadent twist.

Java Chip Frappuccino

One of the most popular double blended coffee drinks is the Java Chip Frappuccino.

It breaks down the chocolate chips into smaller pieces, making them easier to drink through a straw.

When I order it ‘regularly’ blended, I find a lot of the java chips at the bottom of my cup!

I want all my chips, so double-blended it is.

It doesn’t happen often but there are times when I’m craving something fruity and fresh when I head to my local Starbucks.

Refreshers are already delicious on ice, but double-blended and these drinks are simply crave-worthy.

My favorite Refreshers to ask for double-blended are the Strawberry Acai and Dragon Drink, which is super creamy thanks to the coconut milk!

Just don’t ask for more ice, as it makes the consistency a bit weird.

How To Order A Double Blended Starbucks Drink

Here’s how to easily order a double blended drink:

In Store

Ordering a double-blended drink in-store is pretty simple.

Simply ask the baristas for the drink double-blended.

So, the formula I usually use is "order + customization + special request." For example, 'one caramel Frappuccino with 2 pumps of vanilla syrup, double-blended’.

The process is longer than the normal preparation of blended drinks and requires the use of a blender (obviously).

Due to this, when it's rush hour or when there are a lot of customers in the store, I avoid asking for double-blended drinks.

On The Starbucks App

Unfortunately, there's still no double blended option on the Starbucks app, except for those drinks that are already offered with this modification.

For a double-blended iced coffee, it's not possible to do it through the app.

Tips To Make Your Double-Blended Drinks Extra Smooth

For extra-smooth Starbucks drinks, follow these foolproof steps:

  • Add protein powder: The added protein powder adds a bit of thickness/creaminess I really enjoy. Not to mention the added benefits of extra protein! Check out this interesting info on the best high-protein Starbucks drinks.
  • Add more whipped cream: For a decadent, velvety smooth drink, try extra whip.
  • Less ice: Asking for less ice makes it more rich and luscious.
  • Don’t double-blend hot drinks: This is pretty straightforward.
  • Ask for whole milk: The added protein from the whole milk results in a creamy texture.
