The first time I tried a Dunkin Caramel Craze, I thought that my next stop was to whatever store sold their caramel.

It’s buttery, rich, and smooth, and if I was brave enough, I’d totally ask for a cup of just the syrup.

I’m here to share the scoop on Dunkin Donuts caramel, including an in-depth nutritional guide and my menu faves.

What caramel does Dunkin use?

Dunkin’s caramel is the Torani Caramel Syrup.

Torani is a gourmet flavor company with roots in the motherland of savory, delicious coffee: Italy.

And with that Italian smooth, full-bodied coffee flavor, Torani syrup is no different, offering a rich and creamy caramel with a touch of vanilla.

I think the added vanilla is what really makes the caramel flavor pop.

A Brief History Of Torani

Torani has been spoiling coffee lovers like me since 1925.

This is when the brand’s founders, Rinaldo, and Ezilda Torre, brought a taste of Italy to their new home in San Francisco, California.

The brand’s first flavors were Anisette, Grenadine, Leon, Orgeat, and Tamarindo, among other ingredients.

Fast forward to 1982, and Torani launched their vanilla syrup, used in some of the first-ever flavored lattes.

After seeing success in the flavor syrups industry with a blend of natural and artificial flavors, Torani shifted to focusing on the specialty coffee industry.

In 1994, Torani officially went global, expanding to specialty cafes and everywhere coffee is found.

Today, they haven’t gone too far from SF in San Leandro, California, with a 330,000 square foot “flavor factory”.[1]

Does Dunkin Use Caramel Sauce Or Syrup?

Dunkin Donuts Caramel is an all-natural syrup created and crafted with care by Torani - a shining example of coffee flavor excellence for nearly 100 years.

Here’s the difference between both caramel sauce and syrup:[2]

  • Consistency — Caramel syrups are thinner than sauces, with a consistency similar to honey or maple syrup. Sauces, on the other hand, have a viscous, creamier texture compared to syrups.
  • Ingredients — Caramel syrup from Torani is made with cane sugar, water, and a few other ingredients. Torani caramel sauce is made with corn syrup, sugar, high fructose corn syrup, heavy cream, butter soy lecithin, and more.
  • Usage — Flavored syrups are versatile and easily blend into coffee drinks. Coffee sauces are generally reserved for toppings for drinks like on lattes or mochas, adding a burst of flavor with bold decadence.

Comparison Table

These tasty Dunkin’ coffees perfectly highlight the differences between caramel simple syrup vs. sauce.

What’s In Dunkin Donuts Caramel?

Let’s take a closer look at Dunkin’s caramel:

Ingredients Breakdown

Torani only uses natural ingredients in their beverages, with the sweet, natural flavors making Dunkin caramel drinks the real highlight of the menu.

Here is the ingredient list:

  • Pure cane sugar
  • Water
  • Natural flavors
  • Citric acid
  • Sodium benzoate
  • Potassium sorbate

Both sodium benzoate and potassium sorbate preserve exceptional freshness.

Sugar Content

The sugar content in Torani caramel swirl syrup is 22 g per 2 tablespoons (or 38% of your daily intake based on a diet of 2,000 calories). Sugar lovers rejoice! And dentists beware…

How Many Pumps?

For Dunkin, measuring boils down to the “pump” system, where each Dunkin' Donuts drink size maintains a certain amount of pumps or flavor shots:

A small Dunkin Caramel Swirl gets 2 pumps, a medium 3, and a large 4.

For context, a pump is generally around half a tablespoon or a ¼ of a fluid ounce; that means a small caramel Dunkin drink gets 1 tablespoon of Torani, a medium 1.5, and a large 2.

Fat Content

Dunkin Donuts caramel swirl syrups are fat-free, which means that they mix easily into the coffee.

Fat acts as a flavor carrier, offering a more luxurious, velvety feel with an indulgent caramel texture.

Fat really can change the thickness and separation of coffee drinks, while fat-free syrups don’t change the texture much.

Calorie Content

Dunkin Caramel Flavored Swirl Syrup is 80 calories per 2 tablespoons or 20 per pump.

For contrast, the average Starbucks caramel flavored syrup is double, at 40 calories per pump.

Needless to say, Dunkin's Caramel syrup is more diet-friendly.[3]

What Caramel Options Does Dunkin Donuts Have? (Our Top Picks!)

1. Caramel Swirl

The Dunkin Caramel Swirl is made with freshly-brewed coffee, high-quality creamers, real cane sugar, and a flavor swirl of creamy caramel.

A splash of skim milk brings out the nutty, almost hazelnut/almond flavors of their signature blend.

I love that I can choose between different milk types, flavors, flavor swirls, quantity of espresso shots, and more.

The caramel swirl is the base for a lot of other caramel varietals from Dunkin, including the Caramel Iced Coffee.

2. Caramel Iced Coffee

The Caramel Iced Coffee is a fantastic summer-drinking coffee, and is probably the drink that made me fall in love with iced coffees.

Most iced coffees in my experience ended up diluted and watery.

The Dunkin Caramel Iced Coffee is robust enough that even when the ice melts, it doesn’t taste weak.

The sweetness of the caramel tastes luxurious, perfectly complementing the coffee taste.

The Caramel Craze Signature is velvety-smooth and luxurious, with Italian espresso, frothy milk, caramel syrup, and whip.

I love a good latte, as it’s never too strong and still gives me the hit of caffeine I crave.

The whip, caramel drizzle, and dusting of cinnamon sugar on top make it feel like dessert, too!

What else could you want from a drink?!

The Caramel Drizzle can be added to pretty much any coffee Dunkin Donuts offers, instantly transforming it into a savory-sweet treat.
