I’m a huge fan of straight up black coffee, with maybe a splash of cream if I’m really feeling fancy.

However, when I’m at Dunkin Donuts, I’m definitely getting some coffee outside of my ordinary cup of Joe.

DD offers sweet syrups called flavor “swirls,” but I can also customize the taste of my coffee with a “flavor shot” that is free of dairy and sugar, and is nearly calorie-free.[1]

I’ve sampled and rated them all right here, so let’s dive right in!

These Dunkin’ Donuts flavor shots are available all year round and are perfect for adding some excitement to my coffee without the extra sugar, dairy, or calories!

1. Hazelnut

I love hazelnut-flavored things. If there existed hazelnut-flavored motor oil, I probably wouldn’t hesitate to try a sip.

Well the hazelnut flavor shots in Dunkin Donuts iced coffees and hot brewed coffees are much tastier than anything I’d put in an engine.

If the extra calories and sugar are of no issue, try combining the hazelnut flavor shot with the mocha swirl.

It’s like having a Nutella coffee, and I am definitely on board with that.

2. Coconut

Dunkin Donuts Coconut Cold Brew

Coconut and coffee is a combo that I’ve explored for many years.

The nuttiness of the coconut goes perfectly with the bold bitterness of coffee.

Dunkin has managed to create an authentic coconut flavor that doesn’t have a fake aftertaste, which I love.

It is one of the ‘milder’ flavors, adding a bit of complexity without taking over the natural coffee taste.

3. Blueberry

I’ll admit that blueberry isn’t the first flavor I think of to go with my coffee.

However, I know that berries generally go well with the dark chocolate flavors some coffees feature.

Blueberry quickly has become one of my favorite flavor shots from Dunkin, offering a kind of cozy, dessert-like taste!

Regardless of whether it’s with iced of hot coffee, I highly recommend the woody, slightly sweet flavor.

4. Vanilla

Vanilla is probably the ‘easiest’ flavor to add to coffee, as it’s mild, smooth, and works perfectly with or without milk.

Add it to iced coffee, cold brewed, hot coffee, latte, or cappuccino - it’s all amazing.

The bold, earthy flavor of coffee seamlessly complements the sweet, creamy flavor of vanilla.

5. Toasted Almond

Similar to coconut, toasted almond has a nutty flavor that goes well with coffee.

The toasted almond flavor is buttery and smooth, with a mild taste that I really enjoy.

Toasted almond in an oat milk cappuccino is a match made in heaven!

6. Raspberry

After my pleasant surprise with blueberry, I figured raspberry may be kind of nice, too.

I quite liked the bit of sweet tartness, but not quite as much as blueberry.

However, it was much tastier with ice and milk, with a dessert-like vibe.

Are Dunkin’ Flavor Shots Healthy?

Calorie Content

At only 5 to 10 calories for a Medium size, it helps me stick to my fitness goals nicely.

After all, I don’t want to deprive myself of flavor!

Sugar Content

The flavor shots are also sugar-free.

They are free of artificial sweeteners and dyes. So these are a healthier flavor add-on option.

In a world full of disguised sugar products, it’s nice to hear that something that tastes good and isn’t loaded with chemically modified products.

What Drinks Are Best For Adding Flavor Shots?

I personally don’t like adding flavor shots to drinks that are already packed with flavor or sweetness.

I think they really shine through when they complement a bitter, bold, rich flavor like coffee.

Some flavors, like fruitier ones, taste better on ice. I don’t know why, I just really feel strongly about that.

Chocolate and vanilla flavors are delicious, no matter the temperature. Iced teas also work well with flavor shots, as they’re a bit more bitter.

What’s the difference between Dunkin’ Flavor Shot and Swirl?

The big differences between Dunkin’ flavor shot and swirl are sugar, calorie, and dairy content.

Flavor shots contain no sugar, no dairy, and hardly any calories.

A flavor swirl is sugar-sweetened, which adds 150 - 160 calories per medium-sized cup. They also contain dairy, except for Mocha swirl.

The shots that are available all year round are Vanilla, Hazelnut, Toasted Almond, Coconut, Blueberry, and Raspberry.

Flavor swirls on the menu are Caramel, French Vanilla, Butter Pecan, and Mocha swirl. Seasonal swirl flavors include Pumpkin Spice and Peppermint Mocha.[2]
